The Department of Prisons on Monday dismissed a viral Facebook post claiming to be from detained Awami League leader and former minister Faruk Khan, calling it ‘false and misleading’.

In an official statement, assistant inspector general of prisons (Development) Jannat-Ul Farhad said that disinformation was being spread using a screenshot of a Facebook post allegedly made by Faruk Khan.

The statement clarified that Faruk Khan is currently in Dhaka Central Jail, Keraniganj, where prisoners are not allowed to use mobile phones.

‘Therefore, it is not possible for him to operate his Facebook account in the jail’, the statement said.

‘We are not aware if his Facebook ID is being used by someone else or his relatives,’ it added.

The statement said the authorities asked law enforcement agencies to investigate the matter and take necessary action.
